Update – IRS : Breast Pumps Tax Deductible

Alison Jolicoeur Breastfeeding

We made our voices heard, and the IRS has changed its stance! The IRS announced Thursday that women will now be able to use their health savings and flexible spending accounts to pay for breast pumps and supplies. The cost will be tax-deductible for those without FSAs if medical costs account for more than 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income. The IRS changed its tune after determining that pumps were equal to obstetric care and affected a woman’s body. Hopefully this will encourage women to pump rather than turning to formula when possible. This decision supports the understanding that breast milk is the best choice for babies and provides not only nutrition, but also immune- boosting antibodies. The changes are in effect for 2010 tax filings.
